Story Line: When staff salaries get stolen at his school, a reluctant new teacher sets out to recoup the money and soon discovers the joys of teaching. Guru-Guru Gokil (or Crazy Awesome Teachers in English) is a classic tale of an ambitious man from the village who seeks success in the big city. However, through innumerable failures, he finally comes home to become the one thing he refuses to become: his father. Despite having hated the profession all his life, he returns to his birthplace to pursue a career in teaching. Growing up, the main character, Taat Pribadi (Gading Marten), always did poorly in school. Having his father teach at the very school he studied in didn’t help in the slightest. He resents his father for always scolding him about his grades and swears to be more successful than his father who is “just a teacher”. As we follow the character’s story arc, we see a drastic development happen in the teacher. Pribadi goes from hating every aspect of the title to loving his students and even quickly becoming the most popular teacher there. His unique style of teaching really inspired his students to reach for the stars. This pays homage to how deep of an impact teachers can have on the students they teach. However, in Indonesia, teachers (especially those working in public schools) are paid very low salaries. I think that this maddening issue was addressed really well in the film; How is it that teachers can be one of the most revered professions for being the “hero” of the country, yet get paid so poorly for all their hard work.
