Story Line: First stand-up comedy of Aida Rodriguez, where she tackles the issues of the day and her personal life story. Rodriguez does have a history with the HBO family, however. The HBO Latino brand first featured her in its Entre Nos series back in 2018, and Haddish was behind Rodriguez’s development deal with HBO Max last year to build a sitcom around her life as an Afro-Latina mother of two teenagers. That deal hasn’t quite come to fruition yet, but Entre Nos did put Rodriguez front and center for their tour, and Pause with Sam Jay invited Rodriguez to her parties. After first making waves on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Rodriguez also has racked up credits on one of Shaquille O’Neal’s Showtime comedy showcases, Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, truTV’s Comedy Knockout and Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks, TBS’s Tournament of Laughs, and YouTube’s The Young Turks. All of which serves to support Rodriguez’s reputation as a woman who’s not afraid to share her opinions, which she takes as the titular mantra for her solo debut. While she won’t shy away from politics, Rodriguez mostly uses this hour-plus, which features a 15-minute documentary feature at the end, to talk about her multi-ethnic heritage and ideas, both hers and ours, about identity and family. “I capitalize a lot on talking about being Puerto Rican and Dominican, so it was very important to me that I gave back to the community,” shared Aida Rodriguez while onstage in early November following a New York screening of her latest HBO Max comedy special Fighting Words. At HBO’s headquarters at Hudson Yards, the bold and outspoken DominiRican comic was joined by Fighting Words co-director Nadia Hallgren (Emmy-nominated for Becoming) for an intimate conversation moderated by Hunter College professor and Puerto Rican scholar Yarimar Bonilla to unpack the personal, the political, and the problematic, in her new TV project. Fighting Words is an hour-long special, broken up with a 45-minute stand-up set in the Bronx, where Rodriguez digs into her complicated family dynamics and gives a brutally honest hot take on cancel culture, and a 15-minute documentary where she travels to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic to soul search, awaken, and honor her roots. Written, performed, and co-executive produced by Rodriguez, Fighting Words is in many ways a love letter to her Puerto Rican and Dominican cultures. Rodriguez enlisted Afro-Puerto Rican and Bronx-born Hallgren, and Puerto Rican filmmaker Kristian Mercado (Pa’lante, Nuevo Rico) as directors, hired Puerto Ricans and Dominicans on both islands during production, and passed the mic to emerging Dominican comedians at a stand-up show in Santo Domingo. At the Hudson Yards screening, Rodriguez was dressed in the same cobalt blue power suit she wears in the promo images, exuding the boss comedienne energy of a woman who fully owns and understands her narrative.
