Story Line: After the aftermath of a war, a young girl who was used as a ‘tool’ for war learned to live. With the scars of burns, she goes back to her past to feel the true feelings of the Major’s, “I love you.” Daisy, the granddaughter of Anne Magnolia, stumbles upon the letters sent to her grandmother during her birthdays.[a] She becomes curious about the legend of Violet Evergarden, who is well-known for writing beautiful letters on behalf of her customers. More than half a century ago,[b] Violet receives a request from a terminally ill boy named Yuris to write letters for his family. Meanwhile, Claudia Hodgins finds a mail with a vague address on it and recognizes the handwriting to be from Gilbert Bougainvillea, whom they thought to be dead. He manages to find its origin from the remote island of Ekarte and decides to bring Violet with him. Upon reaching the island, Claudia finds Gilbert alive yet missing his right eye and arm. Gilbert declines to meet Violet due to his guilt of bringing her misery, thinking that she will be happier without him. Violet tries to meet him but the latter insists on not wanting to see her, causing her to emotionally break down. After the funeral of her grandmother Ann, Daisy Magnolia and her parents return to her grandmother's mansion. Daisy, angered at her parents for deciding to return to work right away, rushes out into the garden. She finds a box filled with letters from her great-grandmother to her grandmother. Among the letters, she finds an old newspaper clipping with the photo of a woman: Violet Evergarden, the Auto Memories Doll who helped write these letters. True to form, the animation here is simply breathtaking. The sensitivity in the detail is wide-ranging, from purple flowers slowly opening their bulbs to greet the sunshine to morning dew sliding down freshly cut blades of grass. They attest to Violet’s own maturity, as she learns to unlatch her wounded heart. A mist of melancholy subsumes the film as well: like Violet’s mechanical hands, new technologies such as telephone lines threaten to render her line of work obsolete. Without giving anything away, the bittersweet sentimentality at several crucial sequences will leave the audience scrambling for hankies. While the intense emotion and slow pace are not everyone’s cup of tea, especially those unfamiliar with the series, the romanticism is done exceptionally well, and with unabashed sincerity.
