Story Line: Benji is a nerdy boy from the Somerleyton Estate in Brixton. He spends his days keeping his stoner best friend Arch out of trouble. Leah is a wealthy young YouTuber, obsessed with street culture. This London drama is directed with absolute confidence by first-timers Darragh Carey and Bertrand Desrochers, hitting the ground running with a girl-meets-boy story set in Brixton. It begins with a chaotic rush of teenage energy and hormones when white middle-class teenager Leah (Lily Newmark) gets together with Benji (Ola Orebiyi), who is black and from a low-income family. Before they meet, budding video artist Leah secretly follows Benji around Brixton, voyeuristically filming him handing out flyers for his mum’s nail bar and mucking about with his mates. Her footage gives us a portrait of Benji as an intriguing mix of charisma and shyness – with an innate kindness that makes the tragedy coming his way painful to watch. A promising foundation and strong performances suggest a great independent film in A Brixton Tale, but subsequent developments wind up making this London-set drama wobble on its axis a little. It is a deep shame because all of the ingredients for an unqualified success are here. Something that could have been great winds up being reasonably good instead. It is well-acted by its principal cast and does broadly entertain, but the key emotion felt upon its conclusion is disappointment. Social media is an inescapable part of the modern world. This includes movies, which in recent years have seen entries like Host, Searching, and Assassination Nation all cover the subject. Due to this influx, A Brixton Tale will immediately invite comparison. It tells a strong enough story to stand on its own, but there are some recognizable tropes. For some reason, a common trait among many of these films is the seeming need to cover a wide range of topics. A Brixton Tale is no different as it deals with art and its creation, race, and friendship. This is on top of its commentary on social media. That is a lot for one movie to take in. Especially for one that seems to have a solid premise already.
