Story Line: As Gotham City’s young vigilante, Batman, struggles to pursue a brutal serial killer, district attorney Harvey Dent gets caught in a feud involving the criminal family of the Falcons. In the three months since Alberto's death, the Holiday Killer has targeted the Falcone and Maroni families on Valentine's Day, Saint Patrick's Day, and April Fools' Day. Meanwhile, Bruce has signed much of his assets to Falcone under Ivy's influence. Catwoman subdues Ivy and rescues Bruce. Alfred calls the police and Bruce's lawyers to arrest Ivy and stop the transactions.

I asked this same question to my coworkers when a group of us sat down to watch The Long Halloween, Part One. The book has a lot of famous moments, but one of the biggest ones is its ending: revealing the true identity (or identities) of the Holiday Killer. Each of us sat down and tried to plot out the timeline of events in each of the book’s thirteen issues, in order to try and figure out how the killer could have pulled off each murder – and who the killer even was each time. By the end of the conversation, we’d managed to gleam some answers, but most of those only resulted in more questions cascading onto one another. Eventually, we came to the conclusion that The Long Halloween‘s mystery is inherently flawed.

But by splitting it in two (as Warner Bros. did previously with Batman: The Dark Knight Returns in 2013 and The Death and Return of Superman in 2019), the story can breathe and the mood can build as we follow the threads of the holiday killer that were deftly laid in place last time. As adapted by Tim Sheridan, the screen version largely sticks to the graphic novel that inspired it, with a few divergences here and there that are relatively minor and mostly effective. When both parts are taken together, it makes for an experience just as engrossing to watch as it was to read when it was released in monthly intervals in 1996 and 1997.
