Story Line: A young man is stood up at the altar. His overprotective mother decides to join him in what would have been his honeymoon, so as not to waste the trip. He ails while his mum enjoys the trip of her life.

After José Luis is dumped at the altar, their mother Mari Carmen joins him on what was meant to be his honeymoon. What could possibly go wrong? José Luís (Quim Gutiérrez) just has been stood up at the altar and, if that's not enough, Mari Carmen (Carmen Machi), his persistent mother, has blinded herself on going with him on his honeymoon, with the excuse of not wasting the money. Every minute that they spend together in Mauritius, José Luís is feeling more unhappy and washed-up. Meanwhile, Mari Carmen is having the time of her life, living all the experiences that she has always wanted and revealing herself as the wonderful woman she really is and that nobody in her family can see.

I will insist: This is a horror film. A very innovative proposal in horror, very Spanish, but it’s still a horror film. The fact that it’s packaged as a comedy means nothing; it only heightens the brain’s cognitive dissonance. 

Is it successful as a horror film? Probably not, but perhaps because it doesn’t give us that experience of catharsis that underlies the horror genre; instead, it shoves our face straight into the things we really don’t ever want to think about. I could mention the characters by their names here, but I’d rather refer to them by their family roles, resorting to their archetypical functions to drive home how they are not actually in a comedy; they are being subjected to a Freudian horror of manners.
