Story Line: 13-year-old Nate Foster is an unpopular Midwestern kid who entertains vivid fantasies of becoming a big Broadway musical star. Nate Foster is a 13-year-old boy who lives in Pittsburgh and dreams of being a Broadway star. His parents, Rex and Sherrie, are understanding while his older brother Anthony is put off by his odd behavior. At school, Nate is picked on and gets passed over major roles in a school play, but he finds solace in his only friend Libby who supports him in his endeavors despite her own stage fright. She informs him that auditions are being held for a Broadway adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, but Nate is unsure whether he can make it. As luck would have it, Nate's parents decide to get away for a while. Anthony uses the opportunity to hang out with his friends while Nate feigns spending the night at Libby's house.
Nate and Libby sneak away on a bus to New York City without telling anyone. The film is stitched together by a deep love of musicals; there’s also a sense of respect for the craft, a passion that radiates so strongly from Nate. He wants to be on Broadway so badly and he's willing to continue fighting for that dream despite any disappointments. Wood plays Nate with such warm exuberance that it's hard to do anything but root for him. He is confident in his craft, weakened only by the lack of support he feels from his older brother (Joshua Bassett), who Nate believes doesn't like him or his love of musicals all that much. Their strained dynamic makes Nate's final moment in the spotlight all the better and it feels earned. Nate’s best and apparently only friend is Libby (Aria Brooks, who has perfected the snap of the Eve Arden-style best-friend delivery).

She comforts him when he loses out on the school play with the news that there are open auditions in New York for a new musical based on “Lilo and Stitch,” the animated Disney film about a Hawaiian girl who befriends a space creature. Conveniently, Nate’s parents and brother will be away for the weekend, so he and Libby sneak off to Manhattan on an overnight bus. When they discover they cannot audition without a parent or guardian, they conveniently run into Nate’s Aunt Heidi (the ever-delightful Lisa Kudrow), an actress supporting herself as a caterer. She gives Nate some good auditioning advice and lets him stay with her when he gets a callback.
