Story Line: the thief (Smith) who has just been released from prison joins forces with an expert safecracker (Statham) to pull off a heist at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.“The Score” is an ambitious effort, a movie that is both a tense crime drama and a musical. Skillful attention has been paid to both elements by writer/director Malachi Smyth and a strong cast. But these elements are never integrated enough to become organic, and never come together to create a satisfying whole.

I’d be lying if I said that The Score doesn’t start off on a very strange note. As someone who’s rather averse to musicals, I find myself cringing when characters break out in song. But thankfully when it’s first introduced, it kind of works. It probably helps that the song is a straight-up banger. Unfortunately, the singing carries on throughout the movie, doesn’t feature nearly as good of songs, and often takes me out of the moment.

Flynn’s fans will likely enjoy his new, recontextualized renditions; his acting, filling in Mike’s gone-to-seed good looks and tetchy resignation at his receding options, also works outside of the musical accompaniment. Poulter and Naomi Ackie (who is set to play Whitney Houston in an upcoming biopic) can’t quite carry the tunes as well as Flynn can, but the lo-fi, often almost-spoken-word approach doesn’t demand vocal gymnastics or jukebox musical razzle-dazzle – rather, the sort of contemplative soliloquies these accomplished young actors can readily convey.
