Story Line: Wede, regarded as a perfect beauty, will find her true self outside of her imperfections.

WEDE, a feature length film by Lancelot Imasuen, that focuses on female genital mutilation was the star at the recently concluded Nollywood Film Festival Germany (NFFG) which was held in Frankfurt, Germany on August 30 and August 31, 2019. The annual event organized by Ehizoya Golden Entertainment e.V kick-started with the premiere of ‘WEDE’. 

Set in the 1980s, ‘Wede’, an adaptation of Professor Julia Okoh’s novel, ‘Edewede’, exposes the negative effects of female genital mutilation which is still very much prevalent among rural dwellers in the Midwestern part of Nigeria. In the story, a fearless and determined young lady led other women to a revolt that saw an age-long tradition abolished. 

They fought courageously and tirelessly to put an end to barbaric tradition, something most men have had the luxury of taking for granted. WANDE, a housewife known for her loose mouth, speaks without thinking. Her constant criticism and careless remarks often hurt those around her, creating tension and strife in her home. Her inability to keep confidence makes her a source of stress and discomfort for her family.
