Story Line: A teenage delinquent teams up with a surly children’s party magician to navigate her dysfunctional family and inner demons. Sammy (Miya Cech) thinks she’s a badass. She sneaks out of the house, smokes cigarettes, and just gets expelled from her high school for an elaborate prank that ended with her getting a black eye. (She doesn’t mind. It makes her look tough.) Sammy’s widower dad Angus (Leonardo Nam) is fed up with her defiance and threatens to send her to a military camp for troubled teens if she doesn’t start taking her obligations more seriously. In short, Sammy is a rage-filled adolescent. And like many rage-filled adolescents, her anger is but a flimsy lid covering a deep well of sadness.

While par for the course in terms of its premise as well as much of its plotting, “Marvelous and the Black Hole” is still somewhat refreshing in its visual style and experimentation. While not all of these flourishes hit their mark with the technical elegance desired, they do still imbue the film with a clear spirit and tone. For Tsang (a writer on animated TV shows including “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” and “Steven Universe”), lightness comes with darkness, and vice versa, and it is coming to terms with this union — rather than fighting it — that makes us all the better.

The writer-director has a playful style that’s quirky and colorful, utilizing text, animation, archival footage, and a particularly energetic edit (by Ryan Denmark, “We Have Always Lived in the Castle,” and Cyndi Trissel, “Two Sentence Horror Stories”) that’s at times almost jarring, mimicking the violence of Sammy’s dark attitude. The rhythm smoothes and slows after Sammy starts to unwind the tangled knot of emotions she’s carrying around, thanks in large part to time spent with Margot and her magician pals, as well as finally hitting rock bottom in her relationship with her father.
