Story Line: A neo-noir set in New York City’s corrupt contemporary art world where the art dealer John Kaplan and the ruthless head of New York’s mafia, Michael Rubino, fight for money, art, power, and love. The makers of “American Night” often go out of their way to let you know that they’re thinking about their story as it relates to various pop culture touchstones, like the bartender who cosplays Kurt Cobain as photographed by Jesse Frohmann. You can tell a lot about this movie by its ostentatious three-part structure. A buzzing neon sign announces the first chapter’s title: “Art + Life.” That’s also the second chapter’s title, only now that the on-screen title’s shown backward as if we were looking at it from the interior of John Kaplan’s art gallery.

A bullet punctures the glass window that separates us from this very literal sign. We are now theoretically on the other side of the brittle-looking glass that separates one kind of pop art from another. Unfortunately “American Night” often replicates without significantly expanding on a bunch of post-Tarantino clichés about individualism, free will, and the value of art in a world that’s run by shallow gangsters and doofy try-hards. Though the story unfolds in a series of random vignettes and disjointed scenes, it ultimately gives us a very firm sense of understanding and closure. 

John Kaplan (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is an art forger attempting to open his first legitimate art gallery, shaking off the violence and ugly dealings of his past. Meanwhile, Vincent (Jeremy Piven) is a down-on-his-luck stunt actor and martial arts expert who has struggled with recent bouts of dizziness that have made it impossible to work. Vincent has no desire to get involved with John’s formerly nefarious business deals again, but he’s also desperate for cash. Thus, the two meet for a drink at the very moment when a courier is dropping off Andy Warhol’s Pink Marilyn in the same bar. However, gangsters shoot up the bar and attempt to take back the original painting, which was stolen from Michael Rubino (Emile Hirsche), a wealthy gangster and wannabe artist.
