In the entire history of the United States legal system, there has only been one example of demonic possession officially being used as a defense in a murder trial. On Oct. 17, The Devil on Trial premieres, recounting the brutal crime that led to this unprecedented legal strategy. It incorporates firsthand accounts, fictional reenactments, and actual recordings of alleged devil possession.At its core, The Devil on Trial is the heartbreaking story of what happens when one family is ripped apart by a fracturing of strongly held beliefs — and what remains in the aftermath. The story begins in 1980, when an 11-year-old boy named David Glatzel (played by Foster Hamilton) starts shouting blasphemies and acting erratically. His family believes that he’s demonically possessed and arranges for an exorcism. The Glatzel family’s story draws the attention of self-professed demonologists and paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, known for their probe into the infamous haunting in Amityville, Long Island, several years prior.

Here are the facts: on 16 February 1981, 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson, his sister Wanda, his fiancee Debbie Glatzel, her cousin Mary and Debbie’s employer/landlord Alan Bono all went to lunch at a bar in Brookfield, Connecticut. Over the course of the afternoon, Bono drank to the point of inebriated belligerence, and soon began to roughly handle young Mary. A visibly enraged Johnson intervened, tussled with Bono, drew a five-inch pocketknife and stabbed the man repeatedly. Bono succumbed to his wounds a few hours later, and Johnson was apprehended by the police two miles away from the scene of the crime.Once the judge threw out all evidence related to possession, the defense found it increasingly difficult to argue the case. Johnson’s sisters had been at the scene of the crime when it happened, and they had signed police statements saying that they had seen Johnson stab Bono. (Bono was stabbed four times.)

Firsthand accounts of the events from Johnson and others are used as fodder for slick re-enactments, which is where Holt really goes to town: Houses shake, lights shudder and shadowy figures lurk mysteriously, all in the style of a third-rate horror movie. The desperation to be scary, rather than engaging or provocative, is an intellectual failure, and an artistic one — a failure of imagination. Instead of challenging assumptions, exploring implications or discussing the difficult questions here, Holt merely mines the material for superficial shock value and lurid titillation.Ultimately, the judge refused to allow demonic influence to be used as a valid defense in Johnson's trial, and all evidence related to possession was thrown out. With that argument moot, the evidence against Johnson was damning: Johnson's sisters were eyewitnesses to the crime. Despite his continued claims that he never stabbed Bono, Johnson eventually switched his plea to self-defense, and was charged with first-degree manslaughter rather than murder. He was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison.
