Percy Jackson and the Olympians is an American fantasy television series created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg for Disney+, based on the book series of the same name by Riordan. Walker Scobell stars as Percy Jackson, alongside Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri.Development on the series began in May 2020, following a pitch by Riordan to Disney Branded Television. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz were announced as showrunners in July 2021, with James Bobin hired to direct the first episode in October. Scobell was cast in the lead role in January 2022, with Jeffries and Simhadri joining the cast in May. By September, Anders Engström and Jet Wilkinson were also set to direct multiple episodes of the series. Filming began in June 2022 in Vancouver,British Columbia, and concluded in February 2023,with additional cast members revealed throughout 2022 and 2023.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians premiered on December 19, 2023, on Disney+, with the first season consisting of eight episodes. It received positive reviews from critics, who largely praised its faithfulness to the source material, world-building, and cast performances. The series was renewed for a second season in February 2024.Looking at the entirety of Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ first season, it’s easy to see the care that was put into its plotting and execution. There’s an obvious effort to keep this second attempt at a screen adaptation of Rick Riordan’s YA novels true to its source material – and, in the process, create a streaming series that could continue beyond Percy Jackson’s (Walker Scobell) initial adventure among the gods and monsters of Greek mythology. It’s an energy that runs through every aspect of season 1, even when the execution is lacking. And most of the time it isn’t.

For those not well-versed in the fantastical world crafted in Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians novel series, the television adaptation follows the coming-of-age tale of 12-year-old Perseus "Percy" Jackson (Walker Scobell) who discovers he's a preteen demigod and son of Poseidon. What ensues is one of the strangest adventures anyone's ever taken before puberty. And the Disney+ series is ready to transport us to all of the fun.Early and often, impressionable Percy Jackson begins learning that the normal life around him is full of mystical beings. His algebra teacher, Mrs. Dodds (Megan Mullally), turns out to be an evil servant of Hades, the god of the dead. His classmate friend Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) is a mystical spirit. And that's before he gets to Camp Half-Blood with a Centaur camp director, the most supernatural game of capture the flag, and angry Greek gods.
