Jack Kelly, Connor Brody and Mike Richards have been friends and colleagues for decades. Now in their 50s, they struggle with the modern world and how they are expected to behave. For example, when Connor tries to get his son Colin (Dominic Grey Gonzalez) to apologize for hitting people, his wife Cara reprimands him. Deciding to sell their business Trifecta to some millennials, but kept on as employees, they are shocked when the hipster new boss Aspen fires everyone over 35 except them. Moving away from simply selling throwback team jerseys, the company is modernizing, becoming both gender- and carbon-neutral."Old Dads" has a great cast, but it's barely a movie. That's a shame because it's the directorial debut of Bill Burr. Though mainly known as a comedian, talk show guest, and podcaster, Burr has distinguished himself as one of the best standups-turned-actors of his generation, consistently turning in performances in films and TV series that are more thoughtful than were probably necessary to get the job done, and sometimes outright impressive.

His work as Migs Mayfield, a former Imperial sharpshooter turned mercenary in "The Mandalorian," was one of that show's highlights, building to a dramatic climax that echoed Christoph Waltz's final scene in "Django Unchained."In the opening scene, Burr’s Jack, playing catch with his pre-schooler, tells the audience in voice-over that embracing fatherhood later in life was more or less the best decision he ever made. He and his wife, Leah (Katie Aselton), have another baby on the way; as Jack sees it, they couldn’t be happier. So what’s the problem? In the old parental gender wars, men were called out for not being nurturing enough, or for failing to do their share of the housework. Jack isn’t that kind of caveman. He’s a warm, hands-on father, not the sort of ancient old-school sexist who expects his wife to do the heavy lifting of parenting while he’s off working or unwinding.

In Bill Burr’s dire directorial debut Old Dads, our boys Jack (Burr), Connor (Bobby Cannavale), and Mike (Bokeem Woodbine) mostly pine for the past as a golden age when they could get away with anything, before wokeness came in and started pussifying all the alpha males. They literally deal in masculine nostalgia, as the co-founders of a throwback jersey retailer they’ve just sold to a dweeby millennial CEO (Miles Robbins) who will soon use cancel culture to oust them after they’re caught on a mic deadnaming Caitlyn Jenner. Fresh out of a job and each saddled with the duties of a different stage of parenthood, they must adapt or face the prospect of a long, cold and lonely future, a greying Apatovian rehash right down to the wake-up-call Vegas road trip nicked from Knocked Up’s second act. Of course they’ll get their collective act together, but they will not be happy about it, and as they continue to rail against a tolerant present they eventually succumb to rather than accept, neither will we.
