Percy Jackson and the Olympians is an American fantasy television series created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg for Disney+, based on the book series of the same name by Riordan. Walker Scobell stars as Percy Jackson, alongside Leah Sava Jeffries and Aryan Simhadri.Development on the series began in May 2020, following a pitch by Riordan to Disney Branded Television. Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz were announced as showrunners in July 2021, with James Bobin hired to direct the first episode in October. Scobell was cast in the lead role in January 2022, with Jeffries and Simhadri joining the cast in May. By September, Anders Engström and Jet Wilkinson were also set to direct multiple episodes of the series. Filming began in June 2022 in Vancouver,British Columbia, and concluded in February 2023,with additional cast members revealed throughout 2022 and 2023.Upon reaching the Lotus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Percy and Annabeth search for Hermes while Groves goes off in another direction. Eventually, the former duo finds Hermes and asks him if he can help, marking the return of Lin-Maneul Miranda to the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. 

Hermes seems unconcerned with the demigods and their quest but is won over once Annabeth reveals that they are friends of Luke. Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 6 then explains more about Luke's history with his father in another of the episode's major reveals.In maybe the most inconsequential episode of Percy Jackson and the Olympians so far, the gang makes their way through the Lotus Casino in search of another ride, this time from a surprisingly subdued Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes. The dialogue flows more freely this time around, more succinct and less explanatory than last week, which allows for better performances from the young actors. Their chaotic, memory-affecting visit to the Lotus Casino fills out characters and sets up plot threads for future seasons, but doesn’t always prove its worth as the final pit stop on Percy’s journey across the country. 

It does serve as one final chance to let the kids be kids, though, as things start to become much more serious by the end.ercy Jackson and the Olympians premiered on December 19, 2023, on Disney+, with the first season consisting of eight episodes. It received positive reviews from critics, who largely praised its faithfulness to the source material, world-building, and cast performances. The series was renewed for a second season in February 2024.Looking at the entirety of Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ first season, it’s easy to see the care that was put into its plotting and execution. There’s an obvious effort to keep this second attempt at a screen adaptation of Rick Riordan’s YA novels true to its source material – and, in the process, create a streaming series that could continue beyond Percy Jackson’s (Walker Scobell) initial adventure among the gods and monsters of Greek mythology. It’s an energy that runs through every aspect of season 1, even when the execution is lacking. And most of the time it isn’t.
